Early DME - 1982 to 1985 Porsche 944 - BOSCH Models ML1.1 & ML1.2.
Late DME - 1985.5 to 1989 Porsche 944 - BOSCH Model ML3.1

The 944 was redesigned mid year 1985. The DME was changed to a "cheaper" to make model. 1985.0 is used herein to refer to the original DME also called the early DME. 1985.5 is used herein to refer to the new DME also called the late DME.

DME - Digital Motor Electronics or Digitale Motor Elektronik
ECU - Engine Control Unit

Digital Motor Electronics (DME) is a microprocessor based system that controls an engines ignition and fuel injection.

Motronic - A BOSCH electronic fuel-injection and ignition-management system. The first system to combine both fuel injection and ignition-management in a single unit. Replaces the L-Jetronic fuel-injection system that was non-microprocessor based and does not control ignition.
